How we look after your information
DreamyNite is a storytelling site for children and the grown-ups who read with them. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, who can see it, and the choices you have. We keep as little as we can.
1. Information we collect
| What | Why | Who can see it |
|---|---|---|
| Name and email address | To create your account, sign you in, and email a one-time code that confirms the address is yours. | You and the DreamyNite team. Your name is shown next to stories and comments you publish. |
| Password | To sign you in. It is stored scrambled (salted and hashed), so nobody can read it back, including us. | Nobody. |
| Google account details | Only if you choose Continue with Google. See section 2. | You and the DreamyNite team. |
| Account type | Explorer or parent, so we can show the right pages. | You and the DreamyNite team. |
| Stories, drafts and comments | To save your work, let our team review it, and publish it once approved. Drafts are private. | Drafts: you. Approved stories and comments: every reader. |
| Story Wizard stories | When a child makes a story, the pictures they pick (and, in Chapter Club, the short idea they type) are sent to our AI provider, which writes the story. The story is saved on the child's shelf. A parent can switch this off for each child. | The child and their parent. These stories are never published. |
| What children read | When a child in family mode finishes a story, which story and on which day, so the parent can see their child's week in the grown-up area and in the weekly email. | The parent and the DreamyNite team. |
| Premium subscription | If a parent subscribes: the plan, its status, and the dates it renews or ends, so we know what the family can use. Payment details (card, UPI, bank) are entered with Razorpay and never reach us. | The parent and the DreamyNite team. |
| Progress: stars, keys, streaks, finished stories | To run quizzes and badges. | You and the team. |
| Likes, ratings and reads | To count how many readers enjoy a story. For a reader who is not signed in, a read is counted once per internet connection, using its address. | Only as totals. |
| Help Desk messages | To answer you. The name, email and message you type are kept with the message. | The DreamyNite team. |
| Newsletter email address | To send the parents' newsletter. Nothing else is kept with it. | The DreamyNite team. |
| Sign-in activity | The date you were last active, to keep accounts tidy and spot misuse. | The DreamyNite team. |
2. Signing in with Google
If you choose Continue with Google or Sign up with Google, Google confirms who you are and shares a small set of details with us:
- your name, which becomes your DreamyNite display name (you can change it later);
- your email address, which Google has verified;
- your Google profile picture, which becomes your DreamyNite avatar; and
- an account number Google gives us, so we recognise you next time.
We use these details only to create and sign in to your DreamyNite account, which is stored in our database like any other account. We never see or store your Google password, and we do not get access to your Gmail, contacts, files or anything else in your Google account. If your email already has a DreamyNite account, signing in with Google links to that account rather than making a second one.
Google handles the sign-in under its own Privacy Policy. You can remove DreamyNite's access at any time from your Google Account's Security → Third-party connections page.
3. How we use it
- To run your account and keep you signed in.
- To save, review and publish stories, and to show comments and progress.
- To answer Help Desk messages and, if you subscribed, send the newsletter.
- To send a parent a short weekly email about their children's reading, which they can switch off at any time.
- To keep DreamyNite safe: limiting repeated sign-in attempts, moderating content and dealing with misuse.
- To understand, in totals only, which stories are popular, so we can make more of what readers enjoy.
4. What we never do
- We do not sell or rent anyone's information.
- We do not show adverts or use advertising or cross-site tracking.
- We do not ask children for a home address, phone number or school.
- We do not publish a story before our team has reviewed it.
5. Children and parents
DreamyNite is made for children, so we have designed it to collect as little as possible. A child should use DreamyNite with the permission of a parent or guardian, and parents and guardians speak for their children on DreamyNite. A parent can ask to see, correct or remove their child's information at any time.
If you believe a child has joined without a parent knowing, please tell us through the Help Desk and we will remove the account.
6. Who else handles it
We use a small number of trusted providers to run DreamyNite. They handle information only on our behalf and only to provide their service:
- Hosting and database providers, which store the site and its data on secure servers.
- Anthropic, whose AI (Claude) writes Story Wizard stories from the pictures and idea a child picks, and helps our team check new stories before they are published. It is not sent the child's name, age or account details.
- Razorpay, which takes payments for Premium. A parent who subscribes gives their payment details to Razorpay directly, under Razorpay's own Privacy Policy. We pass Razorpay the parent's name and email to fill in the checkout, and an internal account id so we can match the subscription to the account; we get back only the subscription's status and dates.
- Google, if you sign in with Google (see section 2), and to serve the fonts and icons our pages use. Opening a page means your browser contacts Google Fonts.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of a child or anyone else.
7. Storage in your browser
To keep you signed in, DreamyNite saves a sign-in token and a small copy of your profile in your browser's local storage. Some pages also keep quiz progress there. This stays on your device and is removed when you use Log Out or clear your browser data. We do not use advertising cookies, and we do not use this storage to follow you around the web.
8. How long we keep it
We keep your account and stories for as long as your account is open. When an account is closed, we hide it straight away. Deleted stories first go into a restricted recovery bin so an accidental deletion can be undone; they are permanently removed when an administrator purges them or when we complete a deletion request. Help Desk messages are kept only as long as we need them to help you. Newsletter addresses are removed as soon as you unsubscribe.
9. Your choices and rights
- See the information we hold about you or your child.
- Correct anything that is wrong. You can change your name and profile yourself.
- Delete your account and your stories.
- Unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time.
- Disconnect Google from your Google Account settings.
To use any of these, write to us through the Help Desk. We will reply as soon as we can.
10. Keeping it safe
Connections to DreamyNite are encrypted (HTTPS). Passwords are stored salted and hashed, repeated sign-in attempts are limited, and only the DreamyNite team can open the admin area. No website can promise perfect security, but if something goes wrong that affects you, we will tell you.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as DreamyNite grows. The date below shows when it last changed. If a change matters, we will say so on the home page before it takes effect.
